The Commission on Discontinuous Deformation Analysis of International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, in collaboration with the Commission on Discontinuous Deformation Analysis of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering, has achieved substantial success through the International Numerical Modeling Contest of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, known as INCR. This contest has deepened our understanding in various aspects of rock mechanics numerical simulation, including the statistical analysis of human factors, the elucidation of discontinuous mechanisms in rock failure, and the inherent advantages and characteristics of different numerical methods. It has also provided further insights into the developmental needs of numerical methods in rock mechanics. Due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic, last year's contest could not proceed as scheduled. However, this contest is set to resume in mid-October this year, and all necessary preparations have been completed. Based on the previous contest's outcomes, several changes have been introduced in this year's rules:

  1. The organizing committee has expanded to include the Commission on Rock Dynamics of International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering and Commission on Underground Nuclear Power Plants of International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. This expansion aims to broaden the scope of the contest's content.

  2. The contest will now strictly follow a pre-registration system and, for the first time, is open to postdoctoral fellows and undergraduate students. Participants are required to register and choose their respective topics (A: Rock Failure, B: Particle Flow) before the registration deadline.

  3. Each participating team can appoint one mentor, who will be acknowledged in the contest certificates.

  4. The number of awards has increased to 16, with a total prize amount of up to 44,000 yuan. This contest is exclusively sponsored by the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulic Engineering Simulation and Safety of Tianjin University.

  5. The contest duration has been extended from the original 3 days to 5 days, allowing participants more time to showcase their skills.

  6. Contest topics will be emailed to participating teams within the stipulated time.

  7. The number of participants per team is limited to a maximum of 5 individuals.

  8. In alignment with the national dual-carbon goals and to reduce carbon emissions, all award certificates will be issued in electronic format, and paper copies will no longer be provided. The award ceremony will also be conducted online instead of in-person.

We warmly welcome and encourage researchteams to actively participate in this exciting contest!
